Gentlemen, we will begin this morning the consideration of the budget of the Department of the Army. We have across the table from us Mr. Stevens, the Secretary, and General Ridgway, the Chief of Staff, and other officials from the Department of the Army, including the Under Secretary. Gentlemen, we welcome you before the committee. We probably will want to spend 2 or 3 days discussing with you the overall aspects of the 1956 military budget as it refers to the Army. Our committee is larger this year. We have 15 members and it takes a little more time. Since we are called upon to handle the appropriation bill it is important we know as much about the problem as we an. All of you know that at a later date a panel of this subcommittee will have quite extended hearings on the minute details of the budget. At that time the Secretary and his staff will be before the panel also. (1) |
