I think we will go ahead and call the hearing to order. I first want to welcome Director O'Neill. June, welcome. Ms. O'NEILL. Thank you. Senator MACK. Just a brief comment. Last year the Congress embarked on a significant effort to control spending. I think this committee, working with the ranking member, Senator Murray, I think we accomplished at least our portion of the objective of controlling spending. And I want to thank you also for your assistance in that. I know that there was some pressure that was building because of the unfunded mandates legislation that we passed and nobody really knew exactly what that cost was going to be in analyzing the legislations that came forward. But I appreciate the efforts that you all made in that respect. If my memory holds, we reduced expenditures in the legislative branch by almost 9 percent, a major effort, the first time I think |
