are widowed. All of the Syrian, Slovenian, Polish, and Hebrew females are married. With this exception, the Magyars have the largest and the Ruthenians the smallest proportion of married females. Of the foreign-born males, all the Hebrews and a larger proportion of the Slovenians, Scotch, Ruthenians, and Magyars than of the Poles, Syrians, and Lithuanians are married.

Of the persons 45 years of age or over for whom information was secured, 91.7 per cent of the males and 72 per cent of the females are married and 6.6 per cent of the males and 25.3 per cent of the females are widowed.

The proportion of all persons 20 years of age or over who are married is 69.6 per cent for the males and 85.2 per cent for the females, while the proportion of all persons 20 years of age or over who are widowed is 1.3 per cent for the males and 4 per cent for the females. In the case of both the males and the females, a considerably larger proportion of the foreign-born than of the native-born of foreign father are married. Of the foreign-born, the Slovenians, Scotch, Magyars, and Hebrews have the largest and the Lithuanians the smallest proportion of married males. All of the Slovenian females are married. With this exception, the Poles, Hebrews, and Magyars, in the order mentioned, have the largest and the Scotch the smallest proportion of married females. The proportion of widowed females is largest for the Syrians, Magyars, and Ruthenians, in the order mentioned.

AGE CLASSIFICATION OF THE HOUSEHOLDS STUDIED.

In the following table the percentage of persons in the households studied within each age group is shown by sex, and by general nativity and race of head of household:

It appears from the data presented in the above table that, of the males for whom information was secured, 19.1 per cent are under 6 years of age, 13.6 per cent are from 6 to 13 years of age, 2.3 per cent are 14 and 15 years of age, 7.1 per cent are from 16 to 19 years of age, 26 per cent are from 20 to 29 years of age, 25.5 per cent are from 30 to 44 years of age, and 6.4 per cent are 45 or over. The proportion of males under 6, from 6 to 13, and 14 and 15 is larger for the nativeborn of foreign father than for the foreign-born, while the proportion of males from 16 to 19, from 20 to 29, from 30 to 44, and 45 or over is larger for the foreign-born than for the native-born of foreign father. Of the foreign-born, the Poles, Slovenians, Ruthenians, and Slovaks, in the order mentioned, have the largest, and the Syrians the smallest, proportion of males under 6 years of age, and the Hebrews, Slovenians, and Slovaks, in the order mentioned, have the largest, and the Syrians the smallest, proportion of males from 6 to

13 years of age. The proportion of males from 20 to 29 years of age is largest for the Lithuanians, Syrians, Magyars, and Ruthenians, in the order mentioned; the proportion of males from 30 to 44 years of age is largest for the Syrians, Magyars, Slovenians, Bohemians, and Moravians and Poles, in the order mentioned; and the proportion of males 45 years of age or over is largest for the Scotch and Bohemians and Moravians and smallest for the Lithuanians, Magyars, and Poles. Of the females for whom information was secured, 22.9 per cent are under 6 years of age, 17.3 per cent are from 6 to 13, 2.3 per cent are 14 and 15, 8.7 per cent are from 16 to 19, 25.7 per cent are from 20 to 29, 18.1 per cent are from 30 to 44, and 5.1 per cent are 45 or over. The proportion of females under 6 years of age, from 20 to 29 years of age, and from 30 to 44 years of age is larger for the nativeborn of foreign father than for the foreign-born, while the proportion of females from 6 to 13 years of age, 14 and 15 years of age, from 16 to 19 years of age, and 45 years of age or over is larger for the foreignborn than for the native-born of foreign father. Of the foreign-born, the Bohemians and Moravians, Poles, Magyars, and Hebrews, in the order mentioned, have the largest proportion of females under 6 years of age, and the Irish, Scotch, and Syrians, in the order mentioned, have the largest, and the Lithuanians and Ruthenians the smallest, proportion of females 45 years of age or over. The proportion of females from 20 to 39 years of age is largest for the Bohemians and Moravians and Lithuanians, and smallest for the Slovaks and Hebrews, and the proportion of females from 30 to 44 years of age is largest for the Syrians, Irish, Scotch, Hebrews, and Slovenians, in the order mentioned, and smallest for the Bohemians and Moravians.

OWNERSHIP OF HOMES.

Home ownership by families the heads of which were of foreign birth may be considered as a strong indication of permanent settlement, and the facts in this connection relative to the families the heads of which were employed in Community F are set forth in the following table, according to general nativity and race of head of family:

Of a total of 654 families studied, 6.1 per cent own homes. The families whose heads are native-born of foreign father show 6.5 per cent as contrasted with 6.3 per cent of the families whose heads are of foreign birth owning homes. Of the families whose heads are foreignborn those whose heads are Poles show 24.4 per cent owning homes, those whose heads are Slovaks show 19.2 per cent, and those whose heads are Scotch show 15 per cent. The families whose heads are

Ruthenians, Slovenians, Bohemians and Moravians, and Magyars, show between 2.2 per cent and 6.3 per cent owning homes, while no families the heads of which are Hebrews, Irish, and Lithuanians, own homes.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE.

Of the 10,841 pupils for whom information as to general nativity and race of father was secured, 58.7 per cent are of foreign parentage and 39.4 per cent are children of native whites. The foreign races having the largest representation are, in the order mentioned, the Germans, South Italians, Irish, English, Russian Hebrews, and Slovaks.

STATUS OF CHILDREN IN THE HOUSEHOLDS STUDIED.

The status of children in the households studied may be seen in the table following, which shows, by sex and general nativity and race of individual, the per cent of children 6 and under 16 years of age at home, at school, and at work.
