Jennings Bryan Dorn (chairman of the committee) presiding. Chairman DORN. The meeting will come to order. On behalf of the committee, as chairman, I would like to welcome this outstanding and splendid representation of the American Legion to the committee this morning. Our distinguished former chairman, Mr. Teague of Texas, is going to present the national commander in a moment. In the meantime, I would like to present those associated with him and commend them for coming here: Clarence Horton, chairman of the national legislative commission; Mr. Lenker, chairman of the national rehabilitation commission; Herald Stringer, director of the national legislative commission and Ed Golembieski, director of national veterans' affairs and rehabilitation commission. We want to welcome you. [Applause.] Also, I want to recognize and appreciate immensely her being here, Mrs. T. G. Chilton, president of the National Auxiliary. [Applause.] Madam President, would you present the charming and lovely ladies with you? Mrs. CHILTON. I would be happy to. Mrs. B. M. Jarrett of North Carolina, she is the national vice president; Mrs. Deverre Harper of Iowa, our legislative committee chairman; Mrs. Maurice Kubby, our veterans affairs and rehabilitation chairman from Texas; Mrs. Jack Smith, vice chairman and director of field service volunteers, from Arizona; Mrs. Keith Gaines, member of the veterans affairs and rehabilitation committee from Kansas and director of hospital volunteers; Mrs. John Powel, Jr., our VAVS representative from Delaware; and Mrs. Joe L. Matthews from Texas, the wife of our national commander. Chairman DORN. Mr. Commander, I would like to say that I feel somewhat hesitant and have a definite inferiority complex sitting here beside my distinguished former chairman, under whom I served so many years while he was chairman of this great committee. I know of no man in the history of the United States who has done more for veterans than Tiger Teague. But I am happy to report that he is going to stay right on the committee right beside me and guide me |
