PREFACE TO THE FIFTH EDITION.

FIFTEEN years have elapsed since the publication of the first edition of these "Decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States." The number of copies sold during that time shows that the work is valued by the profession.

A part of the plan of the first edition was to append to each case a note referring to all subsequent decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States in which the case in the text had been in any way referred to; so that it should be easy to learn whether it had been overruled, doubted, qualified, explained, or affirmed; and also to see what applications had been subsequently made by that court of the same or analogous principles.

In this edition these references have been brought down to and include the seventh volume of Mr. Wallace's Reports.
