Mr. Rebozo says the President feels the fireplace in the library doesn't draw too well there is smoke in the room.

When they leave the Western WH on Thursday ask Sturtavant go there, start a fire in the fireplace, do what is necessary to see that it does draw right and write me a note so I can send a reply to Mr. Rebozo.

DEAR HERB:

IN REGARD TO THE PROBLEM OF THE FIREPLACE SMOKING. IN THE DEN, STARTED A FIRE IN THE FIREPLACE WITH JACK MERCHANT ON JANUARY 4TH, 1971, THE DAY BEFORE THE PRESIDENT ARRIVED, AND AGAIN ON JANUARY 18TH, AFTER HE HAD LEFT. BOTH TIMES THE FIREPLACE WORKED PROPERLY.

I ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT THERE WERE ONLY TWO OCCASIONS OUT OF ABOUT 10 POSSIBLE TIMES USED WHERE THERE WAS A SMOKING PROBLEM.

MY CONCLUSION IS THAT ON THE TWO OCCASIONS WHEN THE FIREPLACE DID SMOKE THERE MUST HAVE BEEN A DIFFERENT WIND CONDITION THAT CAUSED A DOWN DRAFT BECAUSE OF SURROUNDING TREES, ETC.

THERE ARE TWO POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM:

(1) RAISE THE CHIMNEY TWO OR THREE FEET. I DON'T THINK THIS WOULD BE ACHITECTURALLY ACCEPTABLE.

(2) INSTALL SOME KIND OF AN EXHAUST FAN WITH THE MOTOR IN THE CHIMNEY HOUSING AND THE BLADES IN THE FLUE.

I HAVE JUST RECEIVED THE SPECIFICATIONS FROM THE MANUFACTURER FOR THE EXHAUST FAN. HE TELLS ME THAT THERE ARE FIVE OF HIS UNITS IN THE WHITE HOUSE IN WASHINGTON. THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM. THE FAN HAS TWO SPEEDS AND CAN BE USED AS NEEDED. COST MIGHT BE ABOUT $400.00 FOR THE COMPLETE INSTALLATION. {ll ached)

SOME OTHER PROBLEMS THAT I HAVE DISCUSSED WITH JACK

MERCHANT ARE:

(1) LINT IN THE WASHER. THE WASHER WE BOUGHT IS THE TOP OF THE LINE AND AN EXCELLENT MACHINE BUT THERE IS NO LINT TRAY AS LINT REMOVER PER SE, THE LINT IS JUST REMOVED WITH THE WATER.
