The preparation and revision of the tax assessment maps is an important part of the assessment of real estate, and the following is a summary of the work done in the Surveyor's Bureau during the year: Lot Alterations. Borough of Manhattan-Alterations were made affecting 1,215 lots in the 36 volumes of block tax assessment maps. Borough of The Bronx-Alterations were made affecting 1,563 lots in the 32 volumes of block tax assessment maps and in the 16 volumes of tentative maps. Borough of Brooklyn-Alterations were made affecting 4,997 lots in the 118 volumes of block tax assessment maps. Borough of Queens-Alterations were made affecting 8,153 lots in the 67 volumes of tentative maps. Borough of Richmond-Alterations were made affecting 2,340 lots in the 22 volumes of tentative maps. The duplicate copies of the tax maps used by the Deputy Tax Commissioners in all the Boroughs, and the copies of the block tax assessment maps in the offices of the Bureau of Arrears and Water Registrar in the Boroughs of Manhattan, The Bronx and Brooklyn, were corrected to correspond with the alterations made on the original maps. The identification numbers of real property assessed as real estate of corporations and special franchises were entered on last pages of tax maps of sections and wards in all boroughs. The number of volumes of tax maps in different departments now in actual use for purposes of levying taxes, water rents, assessments and arrears, is as follows: Lands Acquired for Public Purposes. Lands acquired for streets and other public purposes in 146 proceedings were properly shown on tax maps, 2 proceedings were in the Borough of Manhattan, 43 in The Bronx, 28 in Brooklyn, 72 in Queens and 1 in Richmond. New and Altered Street Plans. During the year the Board of Estimate and Apportionment filed 54 maps laying out new and changing existing street plans. Four maps related to Borough of Manhattan, 8 to The Bronx, 5 to Brooklyn, 29 to Queens and 8 to Richmond. The new and altered street plans were shown on the tax maps. Street Closing. The Board of Estimate discontinued and closed one street in the Borough of Manhattan which was taken from the maps. Changes in Street Names. Pursuant to ordinances seven street names were changed in the Borough of Manhattan, 2 in the Borough of The Bronx, 4 in the Borough of Brooklyn and 6 in the Borough of Richmond. New Tax Maps. New block tax assessment maps in quadruplicate were made for volume 1 of section 24 of the Borough of Brooklyn. New tentative maps in duplicate were made for volume 13 and parts 1 and 2 of volume 20 of the Fourth Ward of the Borough of Queens. The new maps were necessitated by radical changes in the street system, adopted by the Board of Estimate and Apportionment. The Tax Maps of the First Ward of the Borough of Queens were revised. The revision consisted in changing the block numbers so as to avoid duplicate numbers in the same ward, changing the street names to avoid ambiguity and obliterating streets, which were not in use, the fee of which was in private ownership. New tentative maps for the Third Ward of the Borough of Queens are in progress. Maps are in progress showing each separately assessed parcel of property indicated by an identification number. The maps include franchises and revocable consents. Building Zone District Maps. The building zone district maps have been altered to show the 17 amendments published during the year by the Board of Estimate and Apportionment. Five of the amendments were in the Borough of Manhattan, two in the Borough of Brooklyn, nine in the Borough of Queens, and one partly in the Boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. Land Maps. In compliance with chapter XXIV of the Greater New York Charter as amended by chapter 514 of the Laws of 1916, the land maps of the Counties of New York and Bronx filed in the offices of the Register and County Clerk of the two counties, in the Finance Department and in the Department of Taxes and Assessments were corrected to show the changes that had taken place during the year 1918. Lists of the alterations and corrections of blocks and block boundaries were also filed with the Registers and County Clerks of the Counties of New York and Bronx. Tentative Land Value Maps.
