WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR STAR

All users of this abstract service are urged to forward reports to be considered for announcement in STAR. This will aid NASA in its efforts to provide the fullest possible coverage of all scientific and technical publications that might support aeronautics and space research and development. If you have prepared relevant reports (other than those that you will transmit to NASA, DOD, or DOE through the usual contract- or grant-reporting channels), please send them for consideration to the NASA Scientific and Technical Information Facility, P.O. Box 8757, BWI Airport, Maryland 21240.

Reprints of journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers are also welcome. These will be considered for announcement in STAR's companion journal, International Aerospace Abstracts.

You may specify a particular source to be included in a report announcement if you wish; otherwise the report will be placed on public sale at the National Technical Information Service. Copyrighted publications will be announced but not distributed or sold.

PURCHASE OF STAR

The semimonthly issues are available to registered users on annual subscription for $99.00 from the NASA Scientific and Technical Information Facility, ATTN: Registration Services, P.O. Box 8757, BWI Airport, MD 21240. STAR is publically available on annual subscription for $99.00 from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC 20402.

SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL INFORMATION DIVISION

Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports, Volume 27, is prepared by the NASA Scientific and Technical Information Facility operated for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration by RMS Associates.

The Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has determined that the publication of this periodical is necessary in the transaction of the public business required by law of this Agency. Use of funds for printing this periodical has been approved by the Director of the Office of Management and Budget through March 22, 1990.

Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports (STAR) is a major component of a comprehensive National Aeronautics and Space Administration information system covering aeronautics, space, and supporting disciplines. STAR is issued on the 8th and 23rd of each month and announces current publications of the following types:

[ocr errors][ocr errors][ocr errors]

NASA, NASA contractor, and NASA grantee reports

Reports issued by other U.S. Government Agencies, domestic and foreign
institutions, universities, and private firms

Translations in report form

• NASA-owned patents and patent applications

• Other U.S. Government Agency and foreign patents and patent applications

• Domestic and foreign dissertations and theses

Journal, book, and conference literature, cover-to-cover journal translations, and certain foreign dissertations are announced in a companion journal, International Aerospace Abstracts (IAA), available on subscription from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Technical Information Service, 555 West 57th Street, 12th Floor, New York, New York 10019.

SUBJECT SCOPE

Subject scope of STAR, and IAA includes all aspects of aeronautics and space research and development, supporting basic and applied research, and applications. Aerospace aspects of earth resources, energy development, conservation, oceanography, environmental protection, urban transportation, and other topics of high national priority are also covered.

OTHER NASA PUBLICATIONS

Other NASA publications and information services are described in the publication, The NASA Scientific and Technical Information System ... and How to Use It, available without charge from the NASA Scientific and Technical Information Facility, P.O. Box 8757, BWI Airport, Maryland 21240.

HOW TO USE STAR SUBJECT CATEGORIES

STAR is categorized by 10 major subject divisions divided into 76 specific subject categories and one general category/division. The major subject divisions are listed in the Table of Contents, together with a note for each that defines its scope and provides any cross-references. For example:

AERONAUTICS

Includes aeronautics (general); aerodynamics; air transportation and safety; aircraft communications and navigation; aircraft design, testing and performance; aircraft instrumentation; aircraft propulsion and power; aircraft stability and control; and research and support facilities (air).

For related information see also Astronautics.

Each major division is further divided into as many as nine specific categories, which are identified by category numbers.

Abstracts in STAR are grouped by specific category, the categories appearing in sequential order. Category breaks in the abstract section are identified by the category number and title, and a scope note. Cross-references to other categories are provided as appropriate. For example:

02 AERODYNAMICS

Includes aerodynamics of bodies, combinations, wings, rotors, and control surfaces; and internal flow in ducts and turbomachinery.

For related information see also 34 Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer.

CROSS-REFERENCES

Individual STAR abstracts are not ordinarily cross-referenced, except for certain conference reports or book translations that have had separate abstracts written for their component papers or chapters. Citations and abstracts of the components follow immediately after those of the parent document. When the subject content of a component differs sufficiently from the general content of the parent, a cross-reference citation also is printed at the end of the category to which it normally would have been assigned if it were independent.

DOCUMENTS ON MICROFICHE

Documents on microfiche) are designated by a pound sign (#) following the accession number. The pound sign is used without regard to the source or quality of the microfiche.

AVAILABILITIES

One or more sources from which a document announced in STAR is available to the public is given in each citation. The most commonly indicated sources and their acronyms or abbreviations are listed below. If the publication is available from a source other than those listed, the publisher and his address will be displayed on the availability line or in combination with the corporate source line.

Avail: NTIS. Sold by the National Technical Information Service. Prices for hard copy (HC) and microfiche (MF) are indicated by a price code following the letters HC or MF in the STAR citation. Current values for the price codes are given in the tables on page vii.

Initially distributed microfiche under the NTIS SRIM (Selected Research
in Microfiche) is available at greatly reduced unit prices. For this service
and for information concerning subscription to NASA printed reports,
consult the NTIS Subscription Section, Springfield, Va. 22161.
NOTE ON ORDERING DOCUMENTS: When ordering NASA publica-
tions (those followed by the symbol), use the N accession number.
NASA patent applications (only the specifications are offered) should be
ordered by the US-Patent-Appl-SN number. Non-NASA publications (no
asterisk) should be ordered by the AD, PB, or other report number shown
on the last line of the citation, not by the N accession number. It is also
advisable to cite the title and other bibliographic identification.

Avail: SOD (or GPO). Sold by the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, in hard copy. The current price and order number are given following the availability line. (NTIS will fill microfiche requests, as indicated above, for those documents identified by a # symbol.)

(1) A microfiche is a transparent sheet of film, 105 by 148 mm in size, containing as many as 60 to 98 pages of information reduced to micro images (not to exceed 26:1 reduction).
