STAR is issued on the 8th and 23rd of each month and announces current publications of the following types: NASA, NASA contractor, and NASA grantee reports Reports issued by other U.S. Government Agencies, domestic and foreign Translations in report form • NASA-owned patents and patent applications • Other U.S. Government Agency and foreign patents and patent applications • Domestic and foreign dissertations and theses Journal, book, and conference literature, cover-to-cover journal translations, and certain foreign dissertations are announced in a companion journal, International Aerospace Abstracts (IAA), available on subscription from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Technical Information Service, 555 West 57th Street, 12th Floor, New York, New York 10019. SUBJECT SCOPE Subject scope of STAR, and IAA includes all aspects of aeronautics and space research and development, supporting basic and applied research, and applications. Aerospace aspects of earth resources, energy development, conservation, oceanography, environmental protection, urban transportation, and other topics of high national priority are also covered. HOW TO USE STAR SUBJECT CATEGORIES STAR is categorized by 10 major subject divisions divided into 76 specific subject categories and one general category/division. The major subject divisions are listed in the Table of Contents, together with a note for each that defines its scope and provides any cross-references. For example: AERONAUTICS Includes aeronautics (general); aerodynamics; air transportation and safety; aircraft communications and navigation; aircraft design, testing and performance; aircraft instrumentation; aircraft propulsion and power; aircraft stability and control; and research and support facilities (air). For related information see also Astronautics. Each major division is further divided into as many as nine specific categories, which are identified by category numbers. Abstracts in STAR are grouped by specific category, the categories appearing in sequential order. Category breaks in the abstract section are identified by the category number and title, and a scope note. Cross-references to other categories are provided as appropriate. For example: 02 AERODYNAMICS Includes aerodynamics of bodies, combinations, wings, rotors, and control surfaces; and internal flow in ducts and turbomachinery. CROSS-REFERENCES Individual STAR abstracts are not ordinarily cross-referenced, except for certain conference reports or book translations that have had separate abstracts written for their component papers or chapters. Citations and abstracts of the components follow immediately after those of the parent document. When the subject content of a component differs sufficiently from the general content of the parent, a cross-reference citation also is printed at the end of the category to which it normally would have been assigned if it were independent. DOCUMENTS ON MICROFICHE Documents on microfiche) are designated by a pound sign (#) following the accession number. The pound sign is used without regard to the source or quality of the microfiche.
