Meets second and fourth Mondays, Freie Gemeinde Hall. The largest increase is in "salaries." This has always been a favorite word under which to conceal profits. Inside rings long ago learned that the easiest way to run a corporation and prevent the little stock holders from getting their share of the plunder was to elect a few favored ones to high salaried positions. In the manufacture of millinery and lace goods for example salaries have increased 134 per cent. in the last five years, while wages have gone up but 58 per cent., and the "value added by manufacturing" 67 per cent. It is this "value added by manufacturing" that is the important item in the new census. We are informed that this is the value of "products less the cost of material." Hitherto, the census has included the cost of raw material in the value of products and whenever it has been attempted to use this value to show the extent of exploitation we were met with the allegation of unfairness and the statement that since the cost of raw materials was included in the figure used no reliable statements could be made as to profits, Oshkosh 145-W. Victor WAGES Now we have the comparison, although only for five years, and we find that in these twenty-four industries that, while salaries amounted to $335,000,000 and wages to $1,290,000,000, the "value added by manufacture less cost of materials" amounted to $3,600,000,000. Adding together "salaries" and "wages" and subtracting these from the "value added by manufacture" we have almost $2000,000,000 as the amount of exploitation, a sum one and a half times as large as the amount expended for wages. If we admit that the whole sum expended for salaries was a legitimate "reward of superintendence" it still remains that the amount taken for profits would increase wages two and a half times. Here is certainly a sum worth fighting for. Nothing is said here of the enormous sums wasted in advertising. Nothing of the expenses of competition. Nothing of the destruction of values by duplication and mismanagement and suppression of inventions and all of the multitude of other ways in which present industry destroys the energy of the workers. The undeniable fact is present that those who do the work of the world could live two and a half times as well were it not for the tribute laid on them by those who do no work. Local Union P. O.
