Kindly NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Office of the National Archives Reorganizes A reorganization of the Office of the National Archives took effect on October 11; it affects approximately one-half of the staff of this office, primarily in the military, civil, and central information divisions. The reorganization, according to Dr. Trudy Peterson, who heads the Office of the National Archives, was prompted by the need to enhance intellectual control over many of the records in the Washington, DC area, to review agency records at the Washington National Records Center (WNRC) in anticipation of the move to the new National Archives facility (Archives II) in 1994. and Dr. Peterson announced the creation of the Archival Allocation and Evaluation Project Staff to be directed by Dan Goggin. This will be a joint project with the Office of Records Administration and Office of Federal Records Centers. This staff will consist of senior archivists and trainees who will be required to rotate through the project. They will identify, schedule, and, where necessary, appraise approximately 1.4 million cubic feet of WNRC records to ensure that all pre-1974 records are scheduled for disposal or transfer to the Office of the National Archives. |
