9 SABOTAGE. “Sabotage" is a term that has become familiar to the American public through its use by the_I. W. W. It is properly viewed with horror and indignation, as the means by which one class seeks to advance its interests at the expense of the highest possible productivity in the industries engaged in producing necessaries. It is something of a shock, then, to find an economist of world-wide repute, Prof. Thorstein Veblen, apply the term to a general and accepted practice of the business community. In his latest book, "The Nature of Peace," Prof. Veblen writes: "The expediency of so having the nation's industry managed on a footing of private ownership in the pursuit of private gain, by persons who can show no equitable personal claim to even the most modest livelihood, and whose habitual method of controlling industry is sabotage--refusal to let production go on except it affords them an unearned income—the expediency of all this is coming to be doubted by those who have to pay the cost of it. And it does not go far to lessen their doubts to find that the cost which they pay is commonly turned to no more urgent or useful purpose than a conspicuously wasteful consumption of perfluities by the captains of sabotage and their domestic establishments. “The word (sabotage) has by usage come to have an altogether ungraceful air of disapproval. Yet it signifies nothing more vicious than a deliberate obstruction or retardation of industry, usually by legitimate means, for the sake of some personal or partisan advantage. It is extremely common in all industry that is designed to supply merchantable goods for the market. * * It is only when measures of this nature are resorted to by employees, to gain some end of their own, that such conduct becomes reprehensible. "Wise business management, and more particularly what is spoken of as safe and sane business management, therefore, reduces itself in the main to a sagacious use of sabotage; that is to say, a sagacious limitation of productive processes to something less than the productive capacity of the means in hand.”—The Public. SU Pasadena, California, held at the “Tea Cup Inn” on Wednesday evening February 6th, These bright flashes stood out against the dark back-ground of the war. And the more serious subject was dealt with in compelling fashion by several speakers. In their talks however, was heard the voice of hope and confidence. Plates were laid for upward of one hundred and fifty members of Local No. 92, their mothers, wives, sisters, sweethearts and friends. Bro. Frank Hill (violin), Prof. Wald, (piano), Otis Mercer and John Graham (Hawaiian instruments) and Harold Simons five piece orchestra furnished the instrumental music. Bro. W. G. Johnson as toastmaster, presided in admirable fashion, and the Johnson smile (that does not rub off) and his comments on the personality of the speakers kept the folks in good humor. Bro. J. F. Tatlow, President of Local No. 92 made a plea for a stronger bond between employer and employee; he urged that they meet oftener and that organization was necessary to success in any field of endeavor. He presented a strong argument in favor of the employment of home labor and organized labor. Bro. Chas. B. Walker favored the banqueters with bass solos, “Any Old Port in a Storm” and “The Sunshine of Your Smile." Judge Robert W. McDonald stated that la. bor organizes with a higher purpose than a mere increase in wages and shorter hours of work. The ultimate aim of organized labor is the Brotherhood of Man. Mr. Charles H. Prisk, editor of the Pasadena Star News, in extending congrat. ulations, remarked, that organized labor was studying more and more the important questions of the day and laid stress on the necessity of education for this and the coming generation. Bro. Leo T. Cleary, who should be on the vaudeville circuit rather than swinging Dutch brushes, had the audience with him in his stories, character impersonations and witty sayings. Accompanied by his accomplished wife he favored the audience with a number of sentimental and comic songs. Rev. Walter C. Loomis, of the Methodist Episcopal church and the Ministerial Union, pointed out the important part the working man of today is playing in all church affairs. He concluded by reading the following orig. inal poem: * * L. U. No. 92 OF PASADENA, CALIF. CELEBRATES ITS TWENTY-SIXITH ANNIVERSARY. Merry song, delightful instrumental music and funny stories enlivened the twenty-sixth annual banquet of Local No. 92 of Rev. Loomis' Original Poem. We're a jolly bunch of painters, painting every thing in sight; It you'll let us do your painting, we'll be sure to do it right; But you'll have to choose your colors, everyone must choose his own; Something good to stand the weather, and the rain, and sleet, and storm. There are some, in choosing colors, paint the town a crimson red; But it's not a lasting color and it's no good when you're dead. Better make another choosing from life's color card so gay, Find some tint with lasting pigment that will stick till judgment day. spoke of President Wilson as the highest type of the American citizen. He knew Secretary Baker personally when they were both citizens of Cleveland, Ohio, and stated that he was a man of the people. He referred to labor's important part in war. Just prior to adjournment silent tribute was paid to the memory of our late brother G. W. Woodhouse--for many years a prominent member of No. 92, who took an active part in its anniversaries but whose chair was vacant at this time--by rising and standing for a moment. We adjourned to meet one year hence. C. A. SAMPSON, Sec'y. Others paint a streak of yellow where there ought to be a spine; And expect their fellow painters not to see the yellow sign; But it only takes a minute to detect the camou flage, And the world will soon be asking for this paint er's quick discharge. Then you've seen the long-faced painter, daubing everything with blue, Spills the indigo all over, even gets some onto you; Get away, you gloomy dauber, hand the Union back your card, Hit the high spots for the timber, hit them quick and hit them hard. But we have a hearty welcome for the painter spreading white, For he makes the world seem purer and he makes the dark spots bright; But we always must remember not to simply cov er up, And when cleaning off the surface wash the inside of the cup. And when Gabriel wants some workman to gild the golden stairs, Painters who take the contract, and work as 'twas theirs, I have inside information, I can tell you what he'll do, He will turn to Pasadena, give the job to "92." Bro. Charles B. Walker touched upon the differences between Labor and Capital; present day profiteering; the necessity for organizing, and what it has accomplished. The armies today are an exemplification of unionism and that organized labor has for decades advocated the government ownership and democratic management of railroads, mines, forests, and water ways. As things are the men who own the machinery of production and distribution, do not use it; the men who use it do not own it. This arrangement allows a few to live without working and forces the many to work at a scale lower than is consistent with a decent living. Mrs. H. S. VanDyke made an earnest appeal for cooperation in the Red Cross work, and spoke highly of the generous response of the members of Local No. 92 to her request that they donate their services to the Red Cross Shop. Judge Wm. A. Spill dealt with the war situation and defended President Wilson and Secretary of War Baker from the attacks of their critics. He RESOLUTION PLEDGING FUNDS.
