extent used as an irregular substitute for actions of ejectment to determine questions in dispute, or sometimes, it was said, for purposes of mere delay and embarrassment. Such abuses can easily be prevented if administrative and judicial officers do their duty. In the United States it seems probable that Massachusetts will adopt the system before long. If it succeeds in one or two States, the others are pretty sure to follow.

The Law and Lawyers of Pickwick. A Lecture. By FRANK LOCKWOOD. London: The Roxburghe Press. I 2mo. 108 pp. (Cloth 18. 6d., Manilla 18., net.) This is a mighty pleasant legal diversion. Bardell v. Pickwick is one of the best known leading cases of English fiction, and Mr. Lockwood is its best possible annotator. Note, learned reader, Mr. Lockwood's reasons for thinking that Mr. Pickwick would have fared even worse under the modern law of evidence, when Serjeant Buzfuz would have had the materials for a crushing cross-examination. The Roxburghe Press particularly wants to know how people like the title-page printed in green ink. To be frank, we love a judicious mixture of red and black after the sixteenth or seventeenth-century manner, but green does not captivate us.
