ter; schooling at Nuneaton (Miss Lewis) and Coventry;
Calvinistic influences; leaves school, December, 1835;
household cares and pursuits after leaving school; first
known piece of literary composition; moves to Coventry
with her father, March, 1841; friendship with Mr. and
Mrs. Bray; life at Coventry; change in her religious
views; consequent domestic disturbances; translates for
publication the "Leben Jesu" of Strauss ; death of her
father, May 31, 1849; tour through France and Italy;
eight months' residence at Geneva; returns to England;
assistant editor of the Westminster Review; meets Mr.
Herbert Spencer and George Henry Lewes at Mr. Chap-
man's house; contributions to the Westminster Review;
removes to Cambridge Street, Hyde Park, 1853; her
union with Mr. Lewes; they go abroad; Weimar and
Berlin; return to England, March, 1855.
