FOREWORD

This report describes in picture and story an exciting special

summer school program for pupils of grades one through six which
took place in Chicago from June 24 to August 16, 1963. This

program proved most stimulating, challenging, and rewarding to
more than 6000 pupils and to a staff of 300. Begun as an exper-
imental project in 1960, the program has consistently shown such
outstanding gains in achievement of boys and girls that the
progress shown cannot be attributed to mere chance. There is no
doubt that the ideal conditions described in this report have
produced the learning conditions which nourished teacher enthusiasm
and satisfaction and added a new dimension to professionalism.
