Notice to purchasers.-In restaurants: No one shall furnish margarine in any hotel, restaurant, boarding house, lunch room, or lunch cart to a guest or patron without placing on the walls thereof in a conspicuous place as to be readily seen by all a white placard on which is printed in black ink, in plain Roman letters of not less than 3 inches in length and not less than 2 inches in width the words "Oleomargarine sold or used here" (ch. 124, sec. 7, Revised Statutes, 1944). No one shall offer or expose for sale, sell or deliver, or have in his possession with intent to sell or deliver within this State any substitute made or colored to imitate natural butter (art. 27, sec. 170, Annotated Code, 1939). Notice to purchasers.-In restaurants: Anyone in charge of a hotel, boarding house, restaurant, or other place where food is sold or served for pay, who serves or user margarine, shall-in case no menu is used-post upon each side of the eating room, and in letters large enough to be distinctly seen and read from all parts of the room, a placard containing in English the words "Oleomargarine used here in place of butter" (art. 27, sec. 172, Annotated Code, 1939). Marking of dishes or menus in eating places: Anyone in charge of a hotel, boarding house, restaurant, or other place where fcod is sold or served for pay, who shall serve, sell, or use margarine, shall have printed on every bill of fare, if one is used, in letters not smaller than 8 point bold-faced Gothie capitals, in English, the words "Oleomargarine used here in place of butter" (art. 27, sec. 172, Annotated Code, 1939). It is unlawful to sell any margarine unless it is free from coloration and ingredients that cause it to look like butter (ch. 94, sec. 54, Annotated Laws of Massachusetts). Notice to purchasers.—Oral: It is unlawful to furnish margarine in any hotel, restaurant, or boarding house, or at any lunch counter, to a guest or patron thereof, without notifying said guest or patron that the substance furnished is not butter (ch. 94, sec. 58, Annotated Laws, Massachusetts). It is unlawful to sell margarine unless it is free from coloration or ingredients that cause it to look like butter (title 12, sec. 12.731 Michigan Statutes Annotated). Notice to purchasers.—In restaurants: The keeper of any hotel restaurant, eating saloon, boarding house, or other place where margarine is furnished to persons paying for the same, shall have on the walls a white placard on which is printed in black ink in plain roman letters, not less than 3 inches in length and 2 inches in width, the words "Oleomargarine sold or used here," which sign must be posted in a conspicuous place readily visible to all entering the room (title 12, sec. 12.743, Michigan Statutes Annotated). It is unlawful to sell, offer for sale, expose for sale, or have in possession with intent to sell margarine containing any coloration or ingredients causing it to look like butter of any shade of yellow (sec. 33.04, Minnesota Statutes, 1941). Notice to purchasers.-In restaurants: It is unlawful for the proprietor of any hotel, dining-room, dining car, drinking place, cafe, bakery, boat, lumber camp, mining camp, railroad camp, boarding house, or hospital, or any place where people are served food for pay, to serve margarine unless-in case there is no menua sign is posted on each side of the room, in a conspicuous place and in letters large enough to be distinctly seen from all parts of the room, bearing the words, in English, "Oleomargarine used in place of butter" (sec. 33.09, Minnesota Statutes, 1941). Marking of dishes or menus in eating places: It is unlawful for the proprietor of any hotel, dining room, dining car, drinking place, cafe, bakery, boat, lumber camp, mining camp, railroad camp, boarding house, or hospital, or any place where people are served food for pay, to serve margarine unless there is printed in English on the menu, if there is one, in letters not smaller than 8-point boldfaced gothic capitals, the words "Oleomargarine used in place of butter" (sec: 33.09, Minnesota Statutes, 1941). Mississippi Notice to purchasers.-In restaurants: Hotels, restaurants, lunch counters, boarding houses, and other places of public entertainment using margarine shall hang cards opposite the tables or other places where guests are served at least 10 by 14 inches in size, which card shall be white and shall have printed in black plain gothic letters at least three-eighths inch square the words "Oleomargarine used here" (title 19, sec. 4551, Mississippi Code, 1942). Missouri Notice to purchasers.-In restaurants: Any hotel or boarding-house keeper serving margarine must clearly and legibly mark the vessel in which it is served with the word "oleomargarine" (ch. 31, sec. 4777, Revised Statutes, Missouri, 1939). No one shall coat, powder, or color with annatto, or any coloring whatsoever, margarine so that it will resemble butter, the product of the dairy. (See p. 20 for additional information.) No one shall manufacture, sell, or expose for sale any poisonous coloring matter for coloring dairy products, nor shall anyone manufacture, sell, offer, or expose for sale any dairy-food products containing such poisonous coloring matter (sec. 2620.43, Revised Code of Montana, 1935, as amended March 8, 1941, ch. 98, Session Laws, 1941). Notice to purchasers.-In restaurants: Hotels or restaurants using imitation butter shall place placards, plainly legible from all parts of the dining room marked "Oleomargarine used here" (sec. 2620.35, Revised Code, Montana, 1935). Nebraska Coloring.-No one in any place where food is served to the public shall offer, deliver, or serve in any way to any person therein, whether compensation therefor is received or not, any "imitation butter" having a yellow color or any shade of genuine yellow (sec. 81-289, Revised Statutes, Nebraska, 1943). Notice to purchasers.-In restaurants: No owner, manager, or employee of any place where food is served to the public shall offer, deliver, or serve in any way to any person therein, whether compensation therefor is received or not, any "imitation butter," unless the person so served is notified either by a statement on each bill of fare or by distinctly printed signs or verbally at the time said "imitation butter" is served (sec. 81-289, Revised Statutes, Nebraska, 1943). No one shall sell margarine unless it shall be free from coloration or ingredients that cause it to look like butter (secs. 44 and 45, Revised Laws, New Hampshire, 1942). It is unlawful for any person to supply margarine which is in imitation of yellow butter for use in any public or charitable institution, hotel, restaurant, lunch room, lunch stand, boarding house, or boarding or industrial camp in the State, or knowingly cause such margarine to be used in such piaces (sec. 47, Revised Laws, New Hampshire, 1942). It is unlawful for any person, within the State, to solicit or take any order for margarine which is in imitation of yellow butter, knowing or having reason to believe the same is for deliverey and sale within the State (sec. 47, Revised Laws, New Hampshire, 1942). Notice to purchasers.—Oral: It is unlawful for anyone to furnish in any hotel, boarding house, restaurant, or at any lunch counter, margarine to any guest or patron without first notifying such guest or patron that the substance is not butter (sec. 47, Revised Laws, New Hampshire, 1942). New Jersey Notice to purchasers.-Oral: No one shall sell any margarine at retail, or in quantities less than the original package, unless he shall first inform the purchaser that the substance is not natural butter but is imitation butter (title 24, ch .13, sec. 3, New Jersey Statutes, Annotated). Information.-State board of health. New Mexico No law. New York Coloring. No one shall mix with milk, cream, or butter any animal or vegetable fat or oil so as to produce margarine in imitation or semblance of natural butter, and no one shall sell, keep for sale, or offer for sale any margarine made in violation of the law, whether it shall be made in this State or elsewhere (sec. 59, Agriculture and Markets Law). No one shall coat, powder, or color with annatto or any coloring matter whatever, margarine, nor shall he have margarine so made in his possession with intent to sell it nor shall he sell, offer, or expose it for sale (sec. 60, sec. 62, Agriculture and Markets Laws). No keeper of any bakery, hotel, boarding house, restaurant, saloon, lunch counter, or place of public entertainment, nor any person furnishing board for any others than members of his own family, or for any employees where such board is furnished for compensation, shall keep, use, or serve therein either as food for his patrons or for cooking any margarine made in violation of the law (sec. 61, Agriculture and Markets Law). Notice to purchasers.-In restaurants: Any keeper of any hotel, boarding house, restaurant, saloon, lunch counter, or place of public entertainment who uses or serves margarine shall put up conspicuously, in different parts of each room where meals are served, signs in places where they can be easily seen and read, which shall bear the words "Oleomargarine used here," in letters at least 2 inches in length (sec. 61, Agriculture and Markets Law). It is unlawful to serve in any public dining room, restaurant, cafe, boarding house, or hotel margarine which is yellow in imitation or semblance of butter, or when it has a tint or shade containing more than one and six-tenths degrees of yellow or of yellow and red collectively, with an excess of yellow over red (sec. 103-234, North Carolina General Statutes, 1943, as amended by the act of March 13, 1945). Notice to purchasers.-In restaurants: A placard with the words "Oleomargarine served here," printed in gothic letters 1 inch long, shall be displayed in some conspicuous place in each dining room, cafe, hotel, or wherever margarine is served to the public. Requirement of the above does not apply to boarding houses. A boarding house is defined as being any person or establishment selling or offering for sale meals under contract, only on a daily basis or multiple of days. Marking of dishes or menus in eating places: The keeper of any hotel, boarding house, restaurant, lunch counter, or other place where meals are served, who uses or serves margarine shall print plainly and conspicuously on the menu, if there is one, the words "oleomargarine used here" (sec. 19-0512, North Dakota Revised Code, 1943). It is unlawful to offer, expose for sale, sell or deliver, or have in possession with intent to sell or deliver for consumption in Ohio, yellow margarine which has a tint or shade of more than 110 degrees of yellow, or of yellow and red collectively, but with an excess of yellow over red (vol. 10, title 1, sec. 12734, Page's Ohio General Code). Notice to purchasers.-In restaurants: Every person in charge of a hotel, boarding house, restaurant, eating house, lunch counter, lunchroom, boat, railroad car, or other place, who sells, uses, disposes of, furnishes, serves, or uses in cooking a substance which resembles, or is made in, or as an imitation of, or a substitute for butter which is not made wholly from purè milk or cream, salt, and harmless coloring matter, shall keep a card in a conspicuous place therein, which shall be white and not less than 10 by 14 inches in size, upon which shall be printed in plain, black roman letters, not less than 12-line pica, the words "Oleomargarine sold and used here" and no other words (vol. 10, title 1, sec. 12732, Page's Ohio General Code). No one shall sell any margarine unless it is free from coloring matter and ingredients causing it to look like butter (title' 34, sec. 34–909, Agricultural Code, Oregon Compiled Laws). Notice to purchasers.-In restaurants: In every public dining room or eating room where margarine is in use, printed notice thereof shall be posted in a conspicuous place as so to be easily seen by anyone entering the room. The notice shall be in letters not less than 2 inches in size and in full-faced type and shall state that "oleomargarine" is used (title 99, sec. 99–2239, Agricultural Code, Oregon Compiled Laws). Marking of dishes or menus in eating places: In any public dining room or eating room where margarine is in use, the bill of fare shall state that fact in the same size type as is used in printing the body of said bill of fare (title 99, sec. 99-2239, Agricultural Code, Oregon Compiled Laws). No one shall sell, offer for sale, expose for sale, or have in pessession with intent to sell margarine unless it is kept free from all coloration or ingredients causing it to look like butter of any shade of yellow (title 31, sec. 801, Pennsylvania Statutes). Notice to purchasers.-In restaurants: Everyone manufacturing or selling margarine shall procure from the Department of Agriculture a sign setting forth that he is engaged in the manufacture or sale of margarine, which sign shall be hung in a conspicuous place on the walls of every room or store in which margarine is manufactured or sold (title 31, sec. 807, Pennsylvania Statutes). In addition to the above, every proprietor of a hotel, restaurant, dining room, or boarding house shall have conspicuously placed upon every counter or table at which food is served, a placard printed in letters not less than one-inch in length stating that margarine is used and served to customers (title 31, sec. 807, Pennsylvania Statutes). Licenses.-Hotels, restaurants, and dining rooms, $2 a year; boarding houses, $2 a year. All licenses expire on December 1 of each year; but licenses may be granted to commence on the first day of any month for the remainder of the year, upon payment of a proportionate part of the annual fee (title 31, sec. 801 and 805, Pennsylvania Statutes). South Carolina Notice to purchasers.—In restaurants: No one having charge of a hotel or restaurant shall knowingly use, or serve therein, either as food or for cooking purposes, any "imitation butter" unless he shall keep constantly posted in a conspicuous place in the room or rooms where it is served, so that it can be easily read by any person in such room, a white card not less than 10 by 14 inches in size, on which shall be printed in English, in plain black Roman letters, not smaller than 1 inch in height and one-half inch in width, the words, "imitation butter used here" (sec. 5129-9, Civil Code, South Carolina). No "substitute for butter" having a yellow color shall be kept in possession, offered for sale, sold, shipped, consigned, or forwarded by common carrier (title 22, sec. 22.0512, South Dakota Code, 1939). Marking of dishes or menus in eating places: Any person operating a restaurant, lunch counter, boarding house, or other place where food is served to the public using and serving margarine, shall have the words "Oleomargarine Used Here" in type in a conspicuous place on the menus, where used, in as large letters as appear on the menu (title 12, sec. 6546.6, Tennessee Code, 1934). Miscellaneous: In any advertisements, pamphlets, folders, recipes, cook books, etc., paid for, published by, or distributed by any margarine manufacturer, distributor, or seller, or by any person engaged in or interested, directly or indirectly, in the promotion of the use of margarine, the word "oleomargarine" or "margarine" shall not be compared with “butter”, nor shall any such cookbook, recipe, or folder use the phrase "butter or margarine" or "margarine or butter."
