Two decades ago the same countries were the source of less than 20 per cent. The countries of northern and western Europe at the present time contribute about 20 per cent. of the immigrants, and 20 years ago they furnished more than 70 per cent. The number of immigrants arriving during each decade since 1820, and the proportion from each specified locality are shown in the following table: IMMIGRATION TO THE UNITED STATES BY DECADES, 1820 TO 1910 [Compiled from the reports of the United States Immigration Commission.] The increase in the proportion of immigrants coming from certain countries of southern and eastern Europe has been remarkable. In 1907, the year of largest immigration, 883,126 persons, or almost 70 per cent. of the 1,285,349 immigrants were from the three countries, Austria-Hungary, Italy, and Russia. The number of immigrants from these three countries combined did not reach 50,000 in any year until 1882, and did not reach 100,000 in any year until 1887.
