A total of almost 2.25 million collection items were served in the
Library's reading rooms in FY 94 and in-person research and reference
service was provided to a total of almost 640,000 readers.

Over one-third of Library users have academic affiliations (faculty, graduate and
undergraduate students); others are performing personal or business related
research, or represent Congressional and government staff. More than 50% of
our users are "repeat customers," and over two-thirds are from the Washington
metropolitan area.

General Reading Rooms and Law Library

Hours

Service

The Library currently provides 65 hours of public service in 9 general
reading rooms (Business, European, Hispanic, Local History and
Genealogy, Machine-Readable, Main, Microform, Newspaper and
Current Periodical, Science) and the Law Library Reading Room. The
schedule is: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 9:30
p.m.; Tuesday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Saturday, 8:30
a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In FY 94, almost 1.64 million collection items were served in these
reading rooms and in-person research and reference service was
provided to over 495,000 readers.

Specialized Reading Rooms

Hours

Service

The Library currently provides 51 hours of public service in the
Manuscript and Performing Arts reading rooms, Monday-Saturday, 8:30
a.m to 5:00 p.m.

The Library currently provides 43 hours of public service in the
following reading rooms:

African/Middle East, Asian, Geography and Map, Motion Picture,
Broadcasting and Recorded Sound, Prints and Photographs, Rare Book
and Special Collections; and Folklife Reading Room. Their schedule is
Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In FY 94, over 609,000 collection items were served and in-person
research and reference service was provided to over 143,000 readers.
