The Honorable Vic Fazio Funds in the amount of $1.35 million were appropriated in fiscal year 1989 to provide for elevator system improvements. Since the appropriation of these funds, the overall elevator improvement program in the House Office Buildings has expanded to include the escalators, particularly those in critical need of modernization. Although we had intended to proceed with elevator service improvements in the Longworth Building, as I have stated, I believe that the safety issues related to the escalators must take precedent. I therefore request that funds in the amount of $300,000 be approved for reprogramming at this time to continue the modernization of the escalators between the Longworth and Rayburn House Office Buildings. I shall, of course, be pleased to provide you with any additional information on this matter you may deem desirable. Mr. PACKARD. With that, unless you have something further to say. Mr. WHITE. No, thank you, Mr. Chairman. CONCLUSION Mr. PACKARD. I think we will conclude the hearing. I have a vote in probably another few seconds, and I better catch it. Thank you very, very much. We will conclude the hearing until 1:30 this afternoon when will reconvene another hearing that will deal with the Congressional Budget Office. Thank you, Mr. White, and all of your people. We appreciate it. [CLERK'S NOTE.-Chairman Packard has asked that the following question from Mr. Fazio be inserted in the record:] Question. Would you provide to the committee a list of the office space that has been assigned to Members, Committee or other offices as a result of the transition. Response. As you know, the assignment of space in the House side of the Capitol is under the jurisdiction of the Speaker, and the House Office Building Commission for the House Office Buildings. The Speaker and the Commission have authorized me to make available to the Committee the space assignment information for Members' offices and Committee spaces. [The information follows:] |
