Industry Groupings

The industry groups were based upon the Enterprise Standard Industrial Classification developed by the Office of Management and Budget, Executive Office of the President. The structure of the SEC Industry Code follows that of the Enterprise Classification (1972) used for the classification of establishments.

In order of present homogeneous groups within the limits of practicability and convenience, the four-digit groups of the Enterprise Standard Industrial Classification were generally utilized. In certain cases the two- to four-digit categories were used and in many instances industry groups consisting of a combination of four-digit groupings were established.
