Excerpt from An Introduction to Protestant Dogmatics

Has the most rigid bonds of relationship and union with the social and philosophical ideas of his time. The function of the theological semi nary is not to make Christians, but to put the Christian possession of prospective ministers in such form that there will be no barrier between the minister and the educated man of his time. Without such a service on the part of the theo logical school the church' will not only lose ground rapidly, but will gradually degenerate into all manner of schisms and sects, dissipating her energy in religious fads and makeshifts and free-lanceism.
