This morning we are pleased to have with us the distinguished Attorney General of the United States, the Honorable Griffin B. Bell. SUMMARY OF JUSTICE REQUEST Before we ask him to proceed with his general statement, I would like to note that the request pending before us for fiscal year 1980 for the Department of Justice totals $2,047,565,000. The budget indicates that revisions will be submitted later based upon legislative proposals which will then bring the total request for 1980 to $2,406,705,000. This amount is $111,562,000 less than appropriations for 1979 adjusted to include supplementals. I should also like to note that the total number of permanent positions requested for fiscal year 1980 is 54,917, a decrease of 1,067 positions from the current authorized strength. We shall insert the justification material under the titles "Summary Tables" and "Language Changes" at this point in the record. [The information follows:] (1) |
