Hayes, In October 1933, during the 19th meeting of the National Conference of Catholic Charities held in New York, His Excellency the Most Rev. Amleto Giovanni Cicognani, apostolic deligate to the United States, issued a challenge to the Catholics of this country to take action in the matter of immoral motion pictures. At the annual meeting of the bishops in Washington, November 1933, the bishops' committee on motion pictures was formed. Present members of the bishops' committee are: Most Rev. William A. Scully, coadjutor bishop of Albany, chairman; Most. Rev. William A. O'Connor, bishop of Springfield, Ill.; Most Rev. Bryan J. McEntegart, rector, Catholic University; Most Rev. Charles H. Helmsing, auxiliary bishop of St. Louis; Most Rev. Timothy Manning, auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles. The Legion of Decency states: "It seeks to obtain and maintain fundamental moral standards on the screen. It desires a screen which will not endanger the moral welfare of children and citizens and, therefore, not jeopardize the moral welfare of our country. It issues, regularly, classifications of films in terms of Christian morality. It presents these moral ratings to the public in order that the public may be informed of the moral character of films currently |
