Funding in the amount of $100,000,000 was approved in Public Law 105-277, the Omnibus Consolidated and Emergency
Supplemental and Appropriations Act, 1999, approved October 21, 1998 for development and construction of a Capitol Visitor Center.
The provision made funding available for the planning, engineering, design, and construction of the Capitol Visitor Center. The
provision also stipulated that development milestones be established, and approved by several committees of the House of
Representatives and of the Senate. Public Law 106-57, the Legislative Branch appropriations Act, 2000 transferred the approval from
the various committees to the United States Capitol Preservation Commission.

The Capitol Visitor Center will provide greater security for all persons working in or visiting the United States Capitol and will enhance the educational experience of those who have come to learn about the Capitol Building and Congress.
