FOREWORD

This issue of Minerals and Materials contains a review of the fourth quarter 1988 economic activity and the first quarter 1989 outlook. The October-December growth rate was 2.0%, the slowest in 2 years. An increasing trade deficit and a slowdown in business investment hindered economic growth. The index of leading indicators climbed in December, reversing direction for the eighth straight month.

Also featured in this issue is an analysis of the impact of the changes in the nonfuel mineral industry on the state and local economies in Arizona and Nevada.

Acknowledgments

Mineral information and data are provided by the commodity and country specialists, research personnel, and State mineral officers of the Bureau of Mines.
