Nineteen Hundred and Sixty Nine

The first volumes of the Pre-1956 National Union Catalog:
A Cunerative Author List Representing Library of Congress
Printed Cards and Titles Reported by Other American
Libraries are published. This massive work, to be
completed over a 10-year period, will contain 610 volumes.

Full-scale distribution of Machine-Readable Cataloging

(MARC

II) tapes begins, utilizing a new MARC format.

The Library of Congress announces establishment of

a laboratory facility "to undertake basic research in the preservation of library materials."

The Library of Congress sponsors an International

Poetry Festival, bringing 8 foreign poets to the United States to meet with their American translators

for a series of readings and discussions.

The Legislative Reorganization Act changes the name

of the Legislative Reference Service to the Congressional Research Service and authorizes expansion of its research services to Congress and to its committees.

A grant from the Kulas Foundation of Cleveland is made to begin a study of the application of computer technology to the transcription of music notations into braille.
